Tasting notes
This is a terrific bottle from the cellar. The Fattoria le Pupille 2013 Morellino di Scansano Riserva Poggio Valente is tight, intact and very elegant. You get a beautiful window on correctly aged Sangiovese in which the brightness of the fruit, the freshness and the softness of the tannins all work to create balanced intensity and power. This vintage hits all the right marks.

This was the vintage in which they started to shift from barriques to botti. Great vintage, according to Le Pupille. Pale crimson. Lots of evolution on the nose. Some balsam and great freshness. Rich start and long finish. (JR)
Le Pupille's 2013 Poggio Valente Riserva represents a clear stylistic departure from the past. Powerful, expressive and also dense, the 2013 nevertheless presents a super-classic interpretation of structure. Far from an easygoing wine, the 2013 is going to need at least a few years to come into its own. This is the second vintage aged in 500-600L barrels, a choice that has given the Poggio Valente a much more classic feel. The 2013 has only recently been bottled, but it is pretty impressive just the same. I can't wait to see how it ages.
Although just racked, the 2013 Poggio Valente Riserva shows Le Pupille's move towards a style that emphasizes nuance and finesse. Some of that is the personality of the year, but the use of larger casks is evident as well. Today, the 2013 is still an infant, but it will be unquestionably fascinating to follow. I can't wait to see what the next year brings.
