A remarkable beauty from the Angus town of Montrose. The elegant nose shows a dram at peace with itself; golden syrup, hay bales, ground hazelnut, liquid honey, French baguette, High Mountain oolong, and rubbed spice blends. Refreshing palate of honey, toffee, citrus, honeycomb wax, and a profusion of sweet vanilla. Rich, sweet oak and deep pepper notes to finish. Truly a sublime and venerable grain. (106 bottles) £2,400

though: this must have been an astonishing grain a decade back. Balance: a friend of mine, just a day or two before I tasted this, by coincidence sent a message saying how lovely it would be if an old Scottish Grain got World Whisky of the Year. Indeed, it would – and it may one day happen. But not this year, despite the excellence of this ancient whisky. Oh, 1972, eh! As a 14-year-old I was running 4 minutes 46 seconds in the 1500 metres for Kettering Harriers and qualifying for the English trials. Montrose, under player-manager Alex Stuart, began the year with a first-footing 3-1 win at neighbours Brechin and went on to have probably their best calendar year in the club’s history on the road with a 6-1 win at Hampden over Queens Park
