Tasting notes
The over-14% alcohol Vatan 2008 Sancerre Clos la Neore would frankly seem closer to being over-the-top were it not tasted right behind its successor! Lime and grapefruit rind, caraway, musk melon, and honeydew dominate on the nose and a palate of breadth and glycerin-richness. Yet, there is some sense of fresh citrus here as well as chalky, alkaline finishing mineral traces. Notes of white pepper, gooseberry, and citrus rind lend a pungent, bittersweet edge and slight sizzle to the faintly warm but impressively persistent finish. I would recommend enjoying this over the next 2-3 years. Anne Vatan-Foucault readily confessed to a hope that her first two vintages shepherding to bottle the roughly 300 cases of wine that her father Edmond made into an unsurpassed benchmark of Sauvignon Blanc do not constitute “the new usual.” Importer: Weygandt-Metzler, Unionville, PA; tel.
