The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Pian delle Vigne is a ripe and fruit-forward expression of Sangiovese from a warm vintage. The bouquet is very opulent and generous as a result with bold cherry, strawberry, candied raspberry and red currant. There is a little less complexity in this vintage, as Sangiovese is sensitive to summer heat. This Brunello shows a soft and smooth quality of tannins with medium persistence. I feel that Pian delle Vigne doesn't give the best of itself in this vintage.

Antinori's 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is one of the sweeter, richer wine of the vintage. A blast of super-ripe fruit proves to be short-lived as the wine's intensity tapers off on the mid-palate and finish. Macerated cherry, spice, hard candy and licorice all meld together in this decidedly forward, succulent Brunello. Elevated alcohol and pronounced sweetness are both distracting.
Tasted blind. Dark ruby that already looks a little developed. Tobacco and malt notes on the nose, as if it is older than it actually is. A nice mouthful of fruit that seems to age fast. (WS)
