Tasting notes
Most years the Schonfels may just nudge the Kupp for prime position, but in 2015 they are more or less on a par. Sometimes too much sun can be a problem, and a winemaker like Florian Lauer may prefer to avoid exuberant excess to retain finesse and vibrancy. If so, he has managed this perfectly with the Schonfels, which, despite its notions of tropical fruit, does not fall into the trap of too much residual sugar. Elegant restraint can be a beautiful thing. Aug 2016, www.jancisrobinson.com, Drink: 2017-2025

Still waters run deep. Still rather closed. This is a very concentrated wine with such sensational balance that you barely feel its enormous power. A year’s patience is needed if you want to experience this in its best youthful form. Sep 2016, www.jamessuckling.com
