The 2015 Echézeaux Grand Cru is slightly darker in color than its peers. There is a fug of reduction on the nose that makes the fruit profile difficult to discern. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, quite masculine and surly in style, although there is impressive substance and grip on the finish. This is in an awkward stage, but I’m convinced it will coalesce and become much more coherent with bottle age. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Tasted blind, the 2015 Echézeaux Grand Cru is quite closed and inscrutable right now, unfurling with aeration to reveal aromas of rich espresso roast, dark chocolate, wild berries and grilled squab. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, firm and structured, its ample chassis of fine but firm structuring tannin rendering the wine hard to read. I suspect this score will prove decidedly conservative once this Echézeaux has spent a few more years in the cellar.

Good dark red. Aromas of black cherry, black raspberry and subtle minerals, in the classic dark style of this wine chez Liger-Belair. Wonderfully velvety in its texture, conveying superb sweetness and spicy depth to its cherry, violet and mineral flavors. The big surprise comes on the spectacularly finish, which features piquant notes of blood orange and mint and outstanding rising length. Very fine-grained tannins accentuate the impression of finesse.
