Score 98/100 · Drink 2027-2075, William Kelley, Wine Advocate, Apr 2018

The 2015 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is a monument in the making, opening in the glass with a deep and complex bouquet of dark berries, cassis, wild rose, dark chocolate, grilled venison and currant leaf. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, powerful and multidimensional, with profound depth at the core and incredible energy and textural finesse despite all its immense concentration and substance, unfurling over the tongue like a roll of velvet. The finish is searingly intense. Like the Lavaux Saint-Jacques and the Evocelles, this Mazis-Chambertin stands out for its bright vertical line, and Loïc Dugat-Py observes that for them this grand cru is a cooler terroir. A dozen years of patience will be essential.

(vinified with 100% whole clusters): Bright, dark ruby. Knockout wild nose combines purple fruits, violet, licorice, smoked meat and soil; very ripe but also the most primary of these 2015s, offering outstanding energy and retention of fresh fruit. Juicy and refined, conveying an impression of mineral reserve to its dark berry and licorice flavors. Has the inner-mouth tension of the finest 2015s without coming across as austere. Most impressive today on the thick-but-bracing slowly building finish, which displays serious tannic grip and lingering notes of bitter chocolate and rose petal. This should evolve at a snail's pace.

(90% vendange entier ): Bright ruby-red. Aromas of blackberrry and licorice are complicated by a hint of game but do not come across as rustic. Dense, sweet and broad on entry, then quite backward in the middle palate even if it's not especially masculine or heavily extracted. Plush wine with good leathery reserve. Finishes with palate-saturating horizontal tannins and superb length. One of the most refined wines in this cellar this year.

100% whole bunch. 100% new oak. Four pièces. Very heady, dramatic nose. Extremely firm, treacly tannins. Very serious and ambitious. Another era of development than the rest of the range. For long-term ageing. Good energy. Long, vibrant finish that resonates to and fro. (JR)
