The 2015 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Thorey 1er Cru offers attractive woodland and tertiary scents on the nose; compact red berry fruit and a touch of black truffle emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins and slightly confit in style, with marmalade-tinged red fruit and allspice toward the finish. Excellent, but it needs much more time in bottle.

I also revisited Cathiard's 2015 Nuit-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Thorey, a wine I had not tasted since early 2017. Wafting from the glass with a bouquet of red berries, orange rind, peonies, rich soil tones and deep carnal nuances, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and muscular, with a rich and concentrated core of fruit, refined tannins and a long, perfumed finish. This is still young, but it's evolving very gracefully indeed.
Cask sample. Not cheap! Dark crimson. Quite a velvety nose and certainly intensity. Fruit dominated any dryness on the finish which was there but not nearly as aggressively as when I tasted in the cellar in early November. A dramatic style that should find favour, with the well-heeled. Just very slightly pinched on the end. A slow burner? (JR)
