Score 89-91/100 · Drink 2019-2029, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Apr 2017

The 2015 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from 60-year-old vines located in Mazoyères-Chambertin. It has a well-defined bouquet: dark cherries, Griottes and a touch of iodine, all nicely defined if perhaps just missing the complexity of the finest grand crus from the appéllation. The palate is medium-bodied with sumptuous tannins, soft and caressing with licorice and truffle infusing the black fruit, though I found this missing a little complexity and structure towards the finish. Give this three or four years in bottle to soften the edges.

Heady, pungent, cordite nose. Lots of sweetness upfront. Not sure I’d pay the premium. Needs a little more drive. (JR)

(from a ~.30 ha parcel in Mazoyères). A ripe, earthy and brooding nose grudgingly offers up notes of red and dark raspberry, pomegranate and plenty of sauvage character. The rich, mouth coating and muscular big-bodied flavors possess an opulent mid-palate and a robust, firmly structured and moderately austere finish where a hint of warmth is present. This is a robust take-no-prisoners style of Charmes that will require plenty of patience. Dec 2016, www.burghound.com
