Tasting notes
The 2015 Volnay Les Caillerets "Ancienne Cuvée Carnot" 1er Cru has a beautiful, enticing, engaging bouquet, featuring marvelously detailed red berry fruit laced with crushed stone and black truffle. The palate is very detailed and precise, with crisp acidity, an insistent grip, and blacker and sappier fruit emerging toward a finish that lingers in the mouth. This is more backward on the palate than the nose, so I would afford it three or four years in bottle. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets "Ancienne Cuvée Carnot" offers up a reserved bouquet of cherry, currant leaf, grilled squab and cedary new oak. On the palate, the wine is fine-grained, medium-bodied and tight at the core, with a greater sense of completeness, cohesion and depth than Bouchard's other domaine reds in the 2015 vintage. It's still lacking the concentration and depth to score higher, but the raw materials here were clearly promising. If it's merely closed, then my score will seem conservative.
Bright, moderately saturated dark red. Aromas of black cherry, dark chocolate, menthol, licorice and minerals. Plush, concentrated and stuffed with extract, with dark cherry, spice, licorice and flinty mineral flavors giving this savory wine excellent energy in the context of the year. Seriously broad, tactile wine with substantial but fully ripe tannins that coat the front teeth. No hole in the middle here! Still a bit youthfully medicinal but fresh, dense and long.
