The 2015 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a smudged, slightly reduced bouquet that just needs more definition and energy. The palate is well balanced, displaying judicious use of oak and well-judged acidity, and offers the detail that is missing on the nose at the moment. I would bunker this for a couple of years because I can see room for improvement. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Full medium red. Youthfully medicinal scents of dark berries and licorice show subtle floral lift. Juicy and penetrating but fairly supple too, showing a sexy sweetness and complicating savory minerality to its strawberry, dark raspberry, spice, violet and licorice flavors. No easy sweetness here but not austere either. The wine's sneaky concentration augurs well for future development in bottle. Finishes fresh, savory and persistent, with harmonious ripe tannins and no shortage of acidity.

Marzipan and cherry aromas, plentiful concentration on the palate – but very simple finish. Perhaps this has the makings of greatness – but they are quite well hidden for now. (RH)
