The 2015 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has a tightly coiled bouquet of high-toned red fruit, raspberry, red currant, pressed violets and iris, and later a hint of baking powder. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, coming across as fresh and lively but very linear and strict at the moment - more like a Clos Saint-Denis in style. But there is a nobility about this wine, and it is certainly persistent. This is one of several wines that shot way past my estimation from barrel. Bravo. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Cask sample. 17 months in oak, 40% new. Mid cherry red. Perfumed with both fruit and spice and what seems like a slight stemmy note giving a light herbal freshness (in 2015 they typically used about 50% whole bunch, a bit higher than usual). Tight, scented but surprisingly toned on the palate. The physique of an acrobat. (JH)

The 2015 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has a focused, quite reserved bouquet that seems to temper the precocity of the growing season and allow the stony terroir to filter through the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple and extremely fine tannin, just the right amount of salinity with an edgy and vibrant, feminine finish. This is a graceful Clos de la Roche from Bichot that should age with style.

(from Genavrières). Heavy reduction runs to mercaptans and while this may clean up, it’s a concern. The good news is that this is a big, powerful and impressively concentrated wine with absolutely outstanding length and richness. However, no matter how impressive the underlying material might be, it’s impossible to know at this stage whether the nose will clean up properly and thus I underscore that my range is provisory.
