(this parcel of 70-year-old vines is located just below the premier cru Les Arvelets on soil that's less red, according to Amélie Berthaut; 40% vendange entier ): Red-ruby. Slightly high-toned aromas of kirsch , blackberry and licorice. Creamy-sweet and utterly silky, conveying a wonderfully refined texture for Fixin. Production here was just 20 hectoliters per hectare owing to millerandage . Almost confectionery in its sweetness: does this wine have the class and grip to reward aging?

The 2015 Fixin en Combe Roy came directly from barrel and included 30% new oak and 40% whole bunch fruit. This is very different from Les Crais on the nose, here a melange of red and black fruit, scents of bilberry and blackcurrant, later a tang of marmalade and blood orange. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine, but firm tannin that underpin the edgy black fruit. There is superb mineralité sewn into this Fixin, which is adorned with great precision and depth on the finish. Q: Why can't all Fixin be like this?
