Score 92+/100 · Drink 2024-2035, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Jan 2018

(from roughly 60-year-old vines in Mazoyères-Chambertin near the Route des Grands Crus; vinified with 10% whole clusters): Good dark red. Darker and more restrained on the nose than the Amoureuses, offering aromas of raspberry, brown spices and soil. Very rich and ripe, conveying an old-vines creaminess and surprising finesse for Mazoyères; not especially sweet or thick but nicely pliant and showing complex soil character. The rather delicate tannins build nicely, giving the finish very good grip.

The 2015 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru does not quite convey the same delineation and mineralité as the Clos Saint-Denis at the moment. There is an attractive marine-like scent here, although it needs to muster a little more precision. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit and in the second half, this grand cru begins to demonstrate more precision and finesse, though it never relinquishes its grip and sturdiness on the finish. It should evolve into a fine Charmes-Chambertin whose score will reside at the upper end of my band.

(from Mazoyères). A note of herbal tea is present on the otherwise ripe yet appealingly fresh nose of cherry, red and dark currant, earth and discreet sauvage nuances. There is excellent richness and mid-palate density to the dusty, mouth coating and markedly firm flavors that deliver fine depth and first-rate persistence. Note however that this too will need at least 6 to 8 years of cellaring and 12 to 15 is ultimately likely to be necessary. Dec 2016, www.burghound.com
