Tasting notes
This widely sourced Spätlese reflects an entirely different degree and sort of ripeness from its Kabinett counterpart, among other things on account of incorporating some lightly botrytized fruit. Nearly overripe muskmelon, peach, and orange dominate headily on the nose and inform a lush, expansive palate, where they tend toward a syrupy expression that wants for liveliness or mineral counterpoint. I glimpse a bit of welcome fresh fruit juiciness and tang on the finish that is welcome in principle, but for the moment, the effect is bifurcated. Still, this is certainly impressively rich and persistent, and perhaps time will ameliorate its limitations.

The 2015 Pündericher Marienburg Riesling Spätlese has a super ripe but elegant and spicy/flinty bouquet with flavors of smoked speck. Dense and lush on the palate but also piquant, enormously pure and salty, this Spätlese reveals stimulating minerality with 11.2 grams of total acidity.
Cask sample. Round and pure and very expressive. Lots of acidity but masses of pure fruit too. (JR)
