Score 87/100 · Drink 2017-2022, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Dec 2016

Castello di Volpaia has created the quintessential easy-drinking wine to pair with thick-crust pepperoni pizza and other similarly sumptuous take-out options. Fresh, tight and slightly nervous, the 2014 Chianti Classico mirrors the cool characteristics of the vintage with underlined acidity. The wine is light in appearance and shows prickly tones of wild berry and white cherry.

Volpaia's 2014 Chianti Classico is fragrant, lifted and translucent in feel, with bright red stone fruit, tobacco, mint and anise nuances laced throughout. This is an especially gracious style, even for Volpaia. The precision of the fruit is at times distinctly Pinot Noir like, but the acidity is unmistakably that of Sangiovese.

Castelnuovo Berardenga. Just mid ruby. Subdued and a little brooding. Compact yet light fruit with firm, but not dominating, tannins. Quite a pretty wine. (WS)
