Scents and flavors of strawberry seductively garlanded in lily-of-the-valley create a more tender impression from this "three-star" bottling than characterizes Molitor’s other vintage 2013 Pinots, and the palate feel here is correspondingly silken and refined. Probably more on account of that tenderness than on account of a larger share of new or new-ish barrels, there is a slightly awkward drying influence on the finish. But seed-crunching invigoration, saliva-liberating salinity, umami savor of veal stock and primary berry juiciness collectively manage to almost completely override that oak effect.

The 2013 Pinot Noir Graacher Himmelreich *** (Three Stars) opens with a beautifully clear, superbly fresh and defined bouquet of wild berries, perfectly ripe grape berries, herbs and graphite. Full-bodied, intense and concentrated on the palate, this is a powerful and densely woven Pinot that seems smoother than the transparent and filigreed Klostergarten. It is terribly fresh and aristocratic though, develops great, tension-filled length and is more of a drama queen compared to the angel from the Three Stars Klostergarten.
About the producer
Markus Molitor is now among the largest privately owned wine estates in the Mosel and also one of the best. With a focus on single-vineyard expressions, the estate produces between 80 and 90 different wines each vintage.
