The 2014 Chianti Classico shows a lot more sweetness and softness than I would have expected from this challenging vintage. This impressive wine is rounder and richer than many of its peers. Representing a blend of 95% Sangiovese and 5% Canaiolo, the wine is redolent of bold cherry, blackberry and plum with softer layers of spice and moist earth at the back. Bottle production is just shy of 50,000.

The 2014 Chianti Classico is soft, open-knit and pretty, but the modest personality of the vintage is impossible to escape. The flavors are bright and nicely focused throughout, but readers will find less depth and overall richness in the 2014 than is customary here.
Gaiole in Chianti. Just mid crimson. Perfumed and balsamic and certainly unusual. Fresh palate with subdued fruit, yet the balance is admirably struck. Elegant finish with a perfect dose of tannins. Skilfully made. (WS)
