The 2012 Chianti Classico Riserva le Baròncole is a structured and powerful wine that reflects some of the austerity that characterizes the difficult 2012 vintage. The wine needs to flesh out further, but it is already showing tight aromas of wild berry and white cherry with spice, leather and cola at the back. Crop yields were reduced in this year. There is a dusty, dry feel to the tannins and the wine offers very long persistency. This bottle should definitely be cellared for a few more years before it is opened.

The 2012 Chianti Classico Riserva Le Baroncole is deep, powerful and concentrated, with a demi-glace level of textural unctuousness that is impossible to miss. Black cherry jam, soy, exotic spices and crushed rose petals blossom effortlessly in the glass. The style is dark and built in a core of gravitas, yet all the elements are in the right place. In the past, the Baroncole has been dominated by new French oak. The move to 500-liter barrels has done wonders for this wine. Beautiful mid ruby. Impressive and very Tuscan nose of cherry, stones, tobacco and nutmeg. Savoury, perfumed palate with lots of depth. Transparent, almost racy red fruit and powdery tannins. If you must buy a Riserva in this vintage it might as well be this one. (WS)
