Tasting notes
Bottled by Niepoort but a one-off community wine made by all the top port producers in aid of the Bagos d'Ouro charity supporting underprivileged children in the Douro. See their website for more information and for a list of the producers who took part. Deepest cherry red. Gorgeous black fruit that is at the same time sweet and darkly earthy – rocky and mineral like the Douro itself. Obviously still a baby but with wonderful, thick, velvet-fine tannic texture and surprising freshness given all the sweetness and alcohol of port. The texture is so finely dry that it cuts right across the sweetness. Very impressive, deep and long and leaves your mouth feeling clean even with all this fruit and tannin. Much much more to come. The 2013 Vintage Port is a unique bottle and project, the combined efforts of 25 top producers contributing grapes. Bottled at Niepoort, its profits are partly designated to support Bagos d'Ouro, a charity for underprivileged children. German Axel Probst, who organized the project, reports on his website that "this Port was trodden in the Niepoort-lagar by one VIP of each House." This was bottled in July, 2015. I did not get any pricing on it, but I'm told it will come to the USA, with the producers involved individually marketing it. Concentrated but elegant, this is most notable for its firmness. It has a serious backbone, a very hard edge and fine focus. Tight and drying now, with a crisp finish, it is bursting with flavor in a controlled fashion that still emphasizes the structure. This is quite beautiful--a wine you can buy to support a charity, to be sure, but also to admire just as wine. It improved steadily over the course of a week.
