Labeled “S” in an allusion to the slate-and-diabase Krettnacher Silberberg where it grew, this bottling completely outclassed a generic Riesling Kabinett tasted alongside that was shrouded in fermentative remnants and dominantly sweet. At 8.5 percent alcohol, this bottling, too, is overtly sweet, but that fits its luscious honeydew melon and white peach fruitiness as well as its honeysuckle perfume. The feel is surprisingly soft and the corners rounded despite analytically high acidity, but the buoyant finish charms thanks to soothing persistence. I have trouble imagining this being quite the sort of long keeper that top-notch Saar Kabinett usually represents.
The 2015 Saar Riesling Kabinett is intense, ripe and smoky on the pure and flinty nose. Round, lush and piquant, with a delicate crystalline acidity and a great finesse, this is a complex and persistent Kabinett with grip and tension. This is impressive!
The 2015 Saar Riesling Kabinett was made from parcels in Krettnach and in Oberemmel (Karlsberg). It offers a nose of sponti, slate and herbs. The fruity side only comes through on the palate where the wine is elegant and superbly spicy. The slate-infused finish delivers freshness, balance and finesse. this proves very enjoyable and a huge success for a "mere" Estate wine.
