Made by the Mitjavile family of Tertre Rôteboeuf and from the Castillon region, the 2015 Domaine de L'Aurage is primarily Merlot blended with 10% Cabernet Franc that was raised all in new oak. It unquestionably has a ripe, modern style with plenty of oak, yet it displays a stunning perfume of crème de cassis and black raspberries intermixed with spice, white truffle, and flowers. It’s deep, full-bodied, and seamless, with ripe tannins, and is a killer wine that’s going to benefit from 2-4 years of cellaring and keep for 15+ years. It’s a gem.

The 2015 Domaine de l'Aurage, Louis Mitjavile's Côtes de Castillon, is laced with sweet red cherry, kirsch, mint and lifted floral notes. As good as the 2015 is, the wine is also marked by its oak and a slightly vegetal quality that may be linked to the oak and that was not present in the barrel sample. Perhaps I had a bad bottle, but I liked this wine more from barrel.

Bottled Nov 2017 (a week before I tasted it). Dark crimson. Has opened to more fragrant dark fruit than the 2016. But the oak is still pretty obvious on the palate. There’s a strong oak sweetness but it is infused with the dark fruit. Oaky and a bit flat on the palate, lacks freshness for me. And it’s hot from that alcohol. It may age longer though I find it hard to predict at this point. (JH)

First vintage was 2007. Very exotic and round – hugely healthy and rich. Sweet but fresh, with a slight sherbet hint and something a little animal. Amazing richness. GV (JR)
