Composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, the medium garnet-purple colored 2015 Lespault-Martillac has expressive red berry preserves, cherry cordial and potpourri notes with a waft of garrigue and black soil. The medium-bodied palate is taut, muscular and firm with plenty of layers and great length.

The 2015 Château Lespault-Martillac is also outstanding, although it doesn’t match the quality of the white. Smoke tobacco, blackcurrants, truffle and plenty of classic Graves earthiness all emerge from this ripe, medium to full-bodied, voluptuously textured red that’s going to drink nicely for 8-10 years. This estate was taken over by Olivier Bernard and his team at Domaine de Chevalier in 2009. They’ve made a beautiful red and white in 2015.

The 2015 Lespault-Martillac is plump, forward and juicy. Mint, sweet herbs and licorice add further shades of nuance, but ultimately, the 2015 is a wine built on forward fruit. This succulent, open-knit Pessac-Léognan should drink well early. The 2015 is an attractive wine, but it also lacks a bit of depth and continuity, something that is especially apparent on the finish.
