Prickly pungency of candied lemon and grapefruit peels, along with intimations of glazed pineapple, tweak the nostrils. To the aforementioned pungency are added, on a glycerol-rich palate, dried green herbal and white pepper impingements. The upshot is a performance as invigorating as it is rich, the long, buoyant finish incorporating just enough fresh fruit juiciness to balance the confectionary elements. Weil reports that the grapes for this were only botrytized to a small extent but otherwise healthy – albeit super-ripe and in part desiccated from exposure to October’s dry breezes.

The 2015 Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Auslese is reductive and shows deep and flinty aromas, almost like a Coche-Dury (and so many of his copycats), but also raisin and grapefruit flavors. Very precise and really impressive. The wine is dense, but highly fine and elegant in its concentration and piquancy. This is a great Auslese from the Gräfenberg and it combines the intellectual spheres of the Gräfenberg with its lush and erotic talents. The finish is long and compact, and shows the mineral backbone as well as the flesh.

Tropical fruit, baked apple, honey and the pure lanolin of clean botrytis tantalise the nose of the beholder. The taste buds surrender to an abundance of luscious exotic fruit sprinkled with fresh juicy raisins, but are revived by a generous measure of animating acidity. The texture is lush, the substance amazing and the finish endless. The Romans would have sipped this lying down. (MS)
