Tasting notes
FINE+RARE, Sep 2016

Cordella is a winery close to our heart. We’ve visited them a number of times in recent years and always been very impressed with their wines, which are still relatively unknown for many within the UK. Having tasted the wines for ourselves, we can say this lack of attention is wholly underserved: these are great wines which have remained remarkably affordable for the quality and are a real boon for any well-stocked Italian cellar. We tried the 2014 Rosso on a visit to the winery and loved it: rounded and rich, it’s a powerful, extremely tasty Rosso that is a pleasure to drink now. It’s also extremely well priced at just under GBP 10 bottle in bond. This is the perfect drinking wine to stock up on and enjoy over the next couple of years. Cordella is owned by Maddalena Cordella, a dynamic winemaker who puts inordinate care into producing Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino of the highest quality. Her philosophy ensures quality at every stage of the winemaking process, from biodynamic farming to strict selection of the very best grapes and fermentation using natural yeasts native to the Cordella vineyards. This high-attention approach results in carefully crafted wines that offer simply brilliant value for money. Bright and inviting on the nose with cherry and red plum and red pepper spice. The structure is tightly-knit and sapid, but also showing some complexity with sugared violets and herbs creeping in on the sweet finish. Stylistically this wine is traditional, while still shining with exuberant young fruit.

A plump, forward wine, the 2014 Rosso di Montalcino is a solid choice for drinking now and over the next year or two. This is one of the richer, more powerful 2014 Rossos I tasted. Dark cherry, mocha and spice flesh out on the juicy finish.
