Bottled in September 2015 after the wine was aged for more than five years in large 100-hl cask. Very dark, developed ruby. Intense nose with lots of depth and with just a touch of leather. This is a little like the straight Bricco Boschis, but everything is more intense and complex. Liquorice and hints of dried fruit but nothing singed. Lots of iron and really minerally. Rich, sweet fruit on the attack. Acidity really playing its part. Then: very compact, fine, grainy, long tannins streamlining the ripe fruit. Impressive stuff. (WS)

Castiglione Falletto. Concentrated ruby with narrow orange rim. Savoury and a bit stalky on the nose and with subdued fruit. Still a little unfocused on the palate. Unfurls slowly on the finish, with tannins built like a brick wall and enormous length. (WS)

The divine 2009 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe shows an impressive level of elegance and grace. You taste the fleshy fruit flavors and the bold tones of the warmer vintage, but there's a good amount of structure and textural finesse to keep the wine in perpetual balance. This Riserva is just beginning to show the signs of careful evolution with fine dustings of white pepper and raw licorice stick. Its texture is exceedingly fine and silky.

The 2009 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is gorgeous, especially within the context of the year. Bold and explosive on the palate, the 2009 captures the essence of the ripe vintage in its racy, extroverted personality. Dark raspberry jam, cloves, new leather, menthol and licorice wrap around the resonant finish. The style is decidedly on the ripe side of things. Then again, dehydration on the vine was an issue. The 2009 spent 28 days on the skins, followed by four years in cask and a year in stainless steel.
