Tasted blind. Sweet, rich nose. Then the palate is pretty inky and stringy, alas. A definite disjoint! Perhaps it will come right in the end? (JR)

The 2015 Phélan Ségur has an engaging and quite complex nose, with peaty red fruit, melted tar and just a dab of black pepper emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, but this seems to narrow toward the finish and seems strangely monotonous compared to its peers. This is a curious showing. The 2015 Phélan Ségur has quite a bold nose that suggests a little more extraction than its peers. Quite generous in terms of fruit - tobacco-laced strawberry and red currant, a hint of saddle leather with time. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannin and a fine bead of acidity. Rather fresh and crisp although, it is missing a little complexity toward the straitlaced finish. I appreciate the balance and focus of this Saint-Estèphe and perhaps it just needs bottle age to manifest more...excitement. Tasted blind at the Southwold 2015 Bordeaux tasting.

With 70 hectares under vine, Ch. Phélan Ségur sits on the eastern side of Saint-Estèphe – neighbouring Montrose and Calon Ségur. Owned by Philippe van de Vyvere since 2017, its gravel soils produce typically firm wines.
