The 2014 Chateau Fonbadet is another solid wine. This medium-bodied, charming, mid-weight effort offers plenty of lots of dusty red fruits, leather and spice. It’s soft, easy going, straight forward and enjoyable, and picks up the classic lead pencil characteristic of this appellation as it sat in the glass. Drink it over the coming decade. This 20-hectare estate (of which a little over 17 are planted with vines) in Pauillac receives consulting advice from none other than Michel Rolland.

The 2014 Fonbadet is showing similar to last year when I first tasted it from bottle. It retains that graphite-tinged bouquet that neatly infused the pure black fruit, whilst the palate is just pure Pauillac, offering graphite-infused black fruit and a very appealing sense of freshness and tension on the finish. This is well worth seeking out, as this property is often good value.

The 2014 Fonbadet is supple and highly expressive. Sweet red cherry, plum, crushed flowers and mint are pushed forward in this attractive midweight Pauillac. Silky, plush and inviting, the 2014 will drink well for another decade plus. This is an impeccable and beautifully balanced Pauillac.

60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc, 20% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and Malbec. Excellent clarity of fruit flavour – so sleek and polished. Meticulous winemaking. Light tannic fur. Fairly light for Pauillac in fact, but absolutely right for flavour. Finishes with a dark, savoury dryness. (RH)
