Good deep red. Aromas of black cherry, minerals and smoky oak. Plush and sweet but energetic too, boasting terrific concentration to its deep, primary flavors of black raspberry, black cherry, licorice, minerals and dried flowers. With its creamy old-vines intensity and inner-mouth tension, this wine made me shiver. Big, broad, dusty tannins will hold this grand cru for many years. A very strong performance but will it eventually display the nuance for an even higher score?

Solid, less charming than the Fonteny actually but with lots of extract. Not that easy to read at present. Undeveloped elements are here. Pretty chunky. (JR)

The 2013 Charmes-Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes has a broody, surprisingly introspective bouquet with raspberry coulis, blackcurrant and sous-bois notes, although to be frank it does not put any gap between itself and the 2013 Gevrey Fontenys. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition, not quite as sensual as other Charmes-Chambertins that I have tasted, just a prickle of white pepper towards the finish, but it declines offering that knockout punch on the finish. And as such, pound for pound I prefer the Fontenys this year that seems to possess the same level of complexity.

Bright medium red. Rich, sweet aromas of kirsch , espresso and menthol lifted by a violet topnote. Very sweet and gentle for this cuvée ; larger-scaled than the Griottes but perhaps not as sexy today as this wine is evolving more slowly. This wonderfully plush, broad grand cru finishes with strong but well-buffered tannins and excellent grip. Am I underrating this today?
