Tasting notes
With this vintage, we see the results achieved with consulting winemaker Luca D'Attoma. The Fattoria le Pupille 2012 Morellino di Scansano Riserva Poggio Valente reveals thick lines and broader brush strokes with dark fruit, more oak spice and bigger fruit weight overall. These qualities also come naturally to this warm vintage. Sangiovese always reveals freshness, and that is ultimately what keeps this wine in balance.

The 2012 Poggio Valente Riserva has come together nicely since I tasted it from barrel. A deep, imposing wine, the 2012 Riserva presents a compelling mélange of flavors and textures. Dark cherry, licorice, new leather, iron, smoke and savory herbs are some of the signatures. Today the 2012 is a bit virile and imposing. It will almost certainly benefit from another few years in bottle. There is plenty of Sangiovese character here.
A wine of tension and energy, the 2012 Poggio Valente Riserva stands out for its translucent personality. The flavors are bright and delineated in the glass. The 2012 represents a significant move towards a much more precise style. Among other things, Poggio Valente is now aged mostly in cask and thick-staved 500-600L barrels. I can't wait to taste this from bottle.
