Maxime poured me the 2014 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru les Petits Monts as I could not work it out last year. Now in bottle it offers candied red cherries and strawberry fruit on the opulent bouquet. The palate is smooth and harmonious with crisp tannins, slightly chalky texture, though I feel it cuts away a little quickly on the finish when I am hoping to see more persistence. More to give? Give this another year in bottle so that it can find its voice.

(from 50-year-old vines; aging in 50% new oak; this and the following wines had not yet been racked at the time of my visit but had been sulfited three weeks earlier): Good dark red. Aromas of raspberry, spicy oak and captivating smoky minerality. Large-scaled, fat and sweet but enlivened by terrific crushed-stone minerality and soil-driven salinity. Seriously good wine with a fine-grained texture and a firm-edged finish.

The Vosne Petits Monts is a decadent wine … The nose is bursting with juicy and cool red and dark fruits … a notch more airy than the Chaumes offering a finely tuned filigree minerality. On the palate deep layered fruit – slightly darker set than the Chaumes – with a lovely inner tension and energy. It’s long, quite intense with a fine acidity adding to the refinement and airyness. Will provide a lot of decadent, hedonistic pleasure over the next decades … a top end Petits Monts … Nov 2015, www.winehog.org, Drink: 2024+

This is at once more elegant and more restrained with its cool, pure and timid nose of spicy cassis, violet and plus aromas. The middle weight flavors exhibit a much more pronounced minerality that also characterizes the muscular, intense and precise finale that is presently youthfully austere.
