Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des 60 Ouvrées from Domaine de la Pousse d'Or has quite a showy, floral bouquet that is a little oaky at the moment and does not really express the vineyard. A light chalk dust scent evolves with aeration in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple red fruit, a gentle grip in the mouth and bitter cherry and orange rind lacing the strawberry fruit although like many other Volnay wines this vintage, it feels a little clipped toward the finish. This does not fulfill the potential it was showing from barrel, but hopefully it will meliorate with bottle age. Tasted September 2017.

Bright ruby-red. More floral on the nose than the Clos de la Bousse d'Or, with aromas of dark berries, licorice and spices displaying more early personality. Then broad, vinous and sweet in the mouth, showing excellent depth of fruit and texture but a bit less open-knit than the nose suggests. Finishes with serious but smooth tannins.
Here too a subtle touch of wood sets off the notably ripe and highly spiced aromas of plum, violet and gentle earth scents. There is a wonderfully refined and ultra-pure mouth feel to the well-delineated and concentrated middle weight flavors that are almost pungently stony, all wrapped in an intense and focused yet lacy finale that exhibits just a hint of youthful austerity. This is positively gorgeous and shows absolutely no ill effects from the hail. In a word lovely. (Drink starting 2024)
