Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, Carillon's 2014 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru les Referts has a crisp, quite terse bouquet with lifted granite and apple blossom scents that are well defined. The palate is well balanced with a tangy, orange peel and passion fruit-tinged entry. There is a slightly honeyed texture to this Puligny-Montrachet although it displays superior tension and definition compared to the Les Referts from Jean-Philippe Fichet tasted alongside, and I appreciate the spiciness on the finish. It does not quite have the sparkle it had when I tasted the wine with Jean-Jacques just after bottling, but it will rediscover that with time.

Bright, pale yellow. Pure aromas and flavors of peach, orange and fresh mushroom. Thick but taut and light on its feet, with savory energy giving the middle palate a penetrating quality. Less sweet but more serious than the Perrières, this is chiseled and precise--even austere--if less enveloping today. Finishes tactile, dusty and long, with strong saline soil tones and a suggestion of iodine.
