Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, Sauzet's 2014 Puligny Montrachet 1Er Cru Champ Canet has a slight reduction on the nose, a very light ash-like scent behind the citrus fruit, grass clippings and perhaps a touch of mulch. The palate is well balanced with grapefruit and a touch of lime on the entry. There is good depth to this Puligny, although it does not deliver the tension and mineralité of the best wines. Conservative? Maybe, although it is still thoughtfully made.

(13% alcohol; from a sunny, early-ripening site): Light, bright yellow. Yellow stone fruits and a whiff of pear on the deeply pitched, rather powerful nose; distinctly less delicate than the higher-altitude La Truffière. Fat, round and sweet but lacking the detail of Sauzet's other 2014 premier crus from Puligny; in fact, this is the first wine to taste a bit warm. Finishes a bit phenolic, with an edge of acidity giving the wine piquant lift but a slightly disjointed character. This was Sauzet's most hailed-on site, noted winemaker Riffault, although he maintained that only 15% of the fruit was affected.

(there was a bit of hail loss here but the fruit ripened well and was picked on the early side): Pale, bright yellow. Deep, leesy aromas of pear and yellow stone fruits show less floral lift and minerality than the higher-altitude Truffière and Folatière. Rounder and fatter in texture, showing less precision but plenty of acidity. A bit sullen and hard to taste today, finishing with a slightly dusty citric quality and a lightly tannic impression.
