Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, Carillon's 2014 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Canet was a bit disappointing on the nose since it lacked the tension and mineral drive of its peers. Perhaps it was just muted on the day? The palate is far superior: balanced with a malic, Granny Smith apple-infused entry, a little pinched with a linear, rather terse finish, but there is class here. It just requires bottle age.

Ripe, expressive, high-toned scents of apricot, peach and orange. Conveys good energy and cut to its bright flavors of yellow stone fruits, orange and spices. Just a touch tight and edgy on the back end, possibly due to the sulfuring at bottling (Carillon told me he bottles with 50 ppm sulfur, which is a higher number than most winemakers will admit to). This has turned out firmer and brighter than it appeared to be from barrel a year ago but will need a few years to harmonize.
Pale medium yellow. A slightly exotic ripe peach aroma is complicated by notes of honey and spices. Thick and round, offering plenty of weight and an impression of sucrosité . Quite rich for Puligny-Montrachet, as the yield for these old vines was cut to just 25 hectoliters per hectare by hail.
