(bottled in August):Bright medium red. Reticent raspberry and menthol aromas are complicated by smoky minerality. Very dry and a bit awkward four months after the bottling, showing a solid underpinning of minerality but not quite the flesh to buffer its slightly edgy acids and tannins. This will need time to harmonize and expand in bottle, but it appears to be a rather delicate style of Grands-Echézeaux.

The 2014 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru was picked on September 18 and contains 15% whole cluster fruit, bottled in August 2015. It has a refined nose, not the most complex that I encountered during my tasting, clean and pure, maybe conservative with chalky scents developing. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannin, a little aggressive here with an attenuated finish. This is the one Grand Cru that I did not get -- maybe not showing on the day? Though it is already in bottle...I wonder if that was too soon? Let's see how this turns out.
15% whole cluster. 17 months in oak. Translucent greyish crimson. Smells a little sweeter than the Clos de Vougeot but still dark-fruited and a hint of smoky reduction. Already bottled, which might be a factor in the way this tastes. Very dry and grippy in texture, rather severe and dry at the moment – this would be OK if there were more fruit concentration in the middle but it is really very dry. Maybe it will come round. (JH)
