Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru from Christian Sérafin has an attractive, perfumed and quite floral bouquet with plenty of red cherries, wild strawberry and pomegranate aromas, the new oak here neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy mouthfeel, good body and a lovely spiciness surfacing toward the Mazis-like finish. I appreciate the tension and length of this Charmes-Chambertin, but it will require several years in bottle to absorb the oak. Tasted September 2017.

Bright red with ruby tones. Ripe but subdued aromas of dark cherry, licorice, roast coffee and mocha verge on decadent. Sweet, broad, seamless wine with lovely density of texture and the concentration that comes from small berries (these old vines produced just 30 hectoliters per hectare in 2014, according to winemaker Bachotet). Even more opulent in the early going than the Cazetiers. Really mounts slowly and builds on the back end, finishing with sexy sweetness and substantial broad, dusty tannins. This wonderfully rich, full wine really transcends the vintage.

Deep ruby-red. Pure but discreet aromas of black cherry, blackberry, animal fur and smoked meat. Then wonderfully sweet and sappy in the middle, more open-knit than the nose suggests. Excellent volume here, as well as sexy burnished oak tones. Tightens up again on the finish. Ultimately less showy and sweet today than the Cazetiers but at a similar level of quality.
