Score 88/100 · Drink 2018-2030, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Oct 2017

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Chauvenet's 2014 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains showed a touch of volatile acidity on the nose that jarred against the otherwise attractive black cherry and cassis fruit. It does seem to calm down with time in the glass, although it does not achieve the sophistication of Chevillon's Les Vaucrains that was tasted alongside. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, chewy tannin, a bit of a blunt instrument compared to its peers, and it cuts away swiftly on the finish. It just needs more charm, more personality. Tasted September 2017.

Deep cherry red. Very ripe-fruited – this, and some of the others in this range smell and look almost more like Grenache than Pinot Noir. Again this just avoids over-ripeness and will appeal more if you prefer a big flavourful style over lighter finesse. Thick, chewy texture but persistent. (JH)
