Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Bel Air from Taupenot-Merme, which was bottled under Diam 10, showed some signs of whole bunch fruit on the nose: earthy and leafy in style, a complete contrast to Serafin's 2014 Les Fonteny tasted alongside. The palate is well balanced but the tannins feel a little coarse on the entry, a Gevrey that needs to knit together its elements to make it whole. It also tapers in a little toward the finish. Give it another two years in bottle and keep your fingers crossed. Tasted September 2017.

Bright red. Classic 2014 lift to the aromas of red cherry, spices and rose petal. Juicy and penetrating, with vibrant cranberry, pomegranate and raspberry fruit flavors further sharpened by saline minerality. Still tightly wound, even a bit austere on the back end, this wonderfully brisk, sappy wine really stimulates the salivary glands.

(from 35-year-old vines on shallow, rocky, oolitic limestone soil directly above Clos de Bèze, with similar geology to the Ruchottes du Dessus just to the north, according to Taupenot): Full red. Vibrant aromas of black raspberry, clove and licorice. Refreshing limestone-driven acidity gives a tangy, high-altitude quality to the intense dark berry flavors. This energetic if tightly wound wine finishes with excellent grip and thrust, with a piquant touch of orange peel.
