Tasting notes
Mastrojanni's 2009 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Loreto is plump, juicy and forward, with plenty of near-term appeal. In this vintage, the Loreto is distinctly fruit-driven in style. Although many of the vineyard signatures are masked by the warm, ripe personality of the year, the wine's overall balance is impeccable.

The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Loreto is delicious. Sweet, aromatic and beautifully layered in the glass, the 2009 present a gorgeous melange of sweet rose petals, mint, red cherries, leather and incense. Everything about the 2009 speaks to polish, elegance and finesse. Sage and rosemary are some of the notes that are woven into the finish. There is a lot to like here. The Vigna Loreto offers good freshness for the year.
The recently introduced single-vineyard 2009 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Loreto is so much more balanced and interesting next to the estate’s base Brunello. The wine’s appearance is richly saturated and compelling and the bouquet imparts careful doses of fruit, tobacco, leather and licorice that gradually build in intensity. The palate shows warms tones of game, Indian spice and cured meat, all capped by a lovely blast of bright red cherry that comes as an unexpected surprise. As is the case with many wines from this vintage, Vigna Loreto is engineered for near to medium-term consumption. Drink: 2016-2023. One of Montalcino’s most historic brands located near Castelnuovo dell’Abate, Mastrojanni is today owned by the founders of Illy espresso coffee. The past decade has seen an impressive series of investments and improvements to quality. Mature-looking deep ruby with orange rim. Spicy fruit cake and a little stewed. Hint of leather. Sweet ripe palate but there is good acidity too. Big tannic finish with flattering oak notes. (WS)
