Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Corton-Rénardes Grand Cru ’11 has noticeable oaky notes on the broody and introspective bouquet, one that takes some coaxing from the glass. There is satisfactory fruit concentration here and despite more pronounced oak, there is sufficient fruit to support it. The palate is smooth and velvety on the entry that renders this approachable. The acidity is a little lower and enhances its plush and sensual personality. Seductive but not intellectual.

(all destemmed): Medium red. Complex if reticent aromas of redcurrant, minerals, smoked meat and pepper. Sweet on entry, then quite firm in the middle, showing hints of candied fruit. The chewy, firm but ripe tannins really clamp down on the finish today. A distinctly intellectual calcaire style of wine.

There is enough reduction to notice along with floral nuances but I would definitely advise decanting this if you're going to try one young. Otherwise there is plenty of earth character on the broad-shouldered and impressively scaled flavors that brim with both dry extract and plenty of power before culminating in a solidly complex, focused and notably persistent finish. This balanced effort should benefit substantially from mid-term plus cellaring.
