(15.2% alcohol): Healthy dark red. Explosive, liqueur-like aromas of black raspberry, mocha, smoke, truffle and graphite. A juicy, powerful fruit bomb on the palate, with penetrating minerality and a surprising edge of acidity giving cut and lift to the dense dark fruit and mocha flavors. In a distinctly masculine style and fairly tannic but this wine softened nicely in the glass.

Colgin no longer produce wine from the Herb Lamb Vineyard, but the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Herb Lamb Vineyard, which was picked the last half of September, was a tiny crop of small berries. It shows lots of lavender, bay leaf, black currants and cedarwood. It is a relatively mature, medium to full-bodied, complex multi-layered, beautiful Cabernet Sauvignon with slightly more herbaceousness than the other cuvees. Drink it over the next decade. This spectacularly beautiful estate high on Pritchard Hill with magnificent views in just about every direction has been on a qualitative tear for many years. From their humble beginnings at the co-op Napa Wine Company (their first releases were in the early 1990s), to the construction of their winery and estate vineyard, quality has soared. Tel. (from vines planted in 1988) Ruby-red. Highly aromatic nose offers black raspberry, black cherry, minerals and gravel. Dense, lush and sweet, with spicy black raspberry, dark chocolate, violet and licorice flavors complemented by oak. This is wonderfully rich (15.5% alcohol) but retains plenty of energy. Finishes very long, with firm but ripe tannins. Impressive.

Good deep ruby. Black raspberry, dark chocolate and an intriguing earth note on the nose. Sweet, densely packed and a bit imploded, with the black raspberry flavor dominating in the mouth. Roasted, sexy wine, finishing with huge but fine-grained tannins and outstanding smoky persistence. This may give the outstanding 2002 a run for its money. The Colgins, working with vineyardist David Abreu, took over farming of this vineyard with the 2004 growing season.
