Score 91+/100 · Drink 2022-2034, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2016

(12.8% alcohol; vinified with 80% whole clusters and aged in 40% new oak; Forey's vines are in the Montiotes Basses section in the northeast corner of the Clos--"near Mortet and Prieur," according to Forey): Medium red. Aromas of cherry, licorice, brown spices and dried flowers. A very savory, spicy Clos Vougeot with primary fruit in the background. Today the whole-cluster spice-and-herb character is keeping the wine tight and backward. Not hard but could use a bit more finesse. This will need patience.

Tasted blind at Fine & Rare Wines' Clos Vougeot tasting, the 2013 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru from Domaine Forey Père & Fils has a delineated, nicely focused bouquet with crisp red cherry and strawberry scents, more "open for business" compared to its peers with subtle mineral/cold stone elements becoming more obvious as it swirls in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, slightly chalky in texture but tensile. I like the energy here, even if it deserves more persistence to show through on the finish. One to watch.

Tasted blind. Unusually pale crimson. Correct, if light, nose. Rather elegant and beautifully poised even if not the most concentrated example. You could almost enjoy this already! Please take note of the suggested drinking window as well as the score. Convincing persistence. Very well made, even if perhaps with the least prepossessing ingredients. (JR)

(vinified with 80% whole clusters): Medium red. Musky red fruit aromas are complicated by spice, crushed stone, leather, game and peppery nuances. Juicy, intense and youthfully imploded; the freshest and most tangy today of these 2013s, with a firm spine of acidity giving focus to the middle palate. Finishes focused and long, with substantial tannic mass and a superripe suggestion of maraschino cherry. Not a supple style of Clos Vougeot; this will take longer to approach its peak.
