Tasted blind at the annual “Burgfest” tasting in Bouilland. The 2013 St Aubin 1er Cru les Charmois has an earthy, slightly green nose that lacks the clarity of pedigree of Jean-Claude Bachelet's own Charmois. There is a touch of boiled asparagus here. The palate is fresh on the entry, but it lacks substance and it feels a little thin and simple towards the finish. Tasted May 2016.

Gentle toasty/smoky note. Delicious mix of delicate reductive character and lively citrus and green-apple fruit. Bright and somehow comforting in the breadth on the finish. (JH)
Friendly fruit with some flinty brightness, and then real richness on the palate. Very sophisticated St-Aubin. (AH)
A hint of matchstick character is present on the equally fresh though slightly riper array of lemon zest, floral and pear scents. There is a bit more volume to the less obviously mineral-inflected medium weight flavors that possess a caressing mouth feel that continues onto the saline-inflected finale. While this should easily be capable of rewarding a few years of cellar time, although it could also be approachable when young. Drink 2018+ 88-91
