The 2014 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaut Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is a step up from the 2013 with more fruit concentration and fine transparency, darker fruit, hints of sous-bois , thyme and freshly tilled loamy soil. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grainy, very supple tannins, elegant and poised with a dash of white pepper. It gently fans out towards the finish that lingers in the mouth. This is an endearing Lavaut Saint-Jacques. Tasted at Domaine Duroché.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaut St Jacques has a simple, quite juicy bouquet with ample fruit—cranberry, wild strawberries and a touch of orange peel. It seems to coalesce and gain harmony with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, ripe tannin and a fine line of acidity, quite pure and juicy with a primal, black plum and white pepper-tinged finish that lingers in the mouth. Very fine indeed, but it will need another couple of years and then it may deserve a higher score. Stylish and traditional Lavaut-Saint-Jacques from Domaine Duroché. Tasted September 2017.

Great freshness and energy. Not for those who seek mass but super-attractive for those who seek refreshment. Not sure that this style will last all that long though. (JR)
