Tasting notes
An excellent choice for current drinking, the 2012 is a very soft, pleasant Ricolma that is approaching its first plateau of maturity. Medium in body and silky, with lovely aromatic presence, the 2012 is very much on the delicate side of things, and yet its balance is impeccable. Sweet red cherry, dried flowers, mint and chalk are all laced into the inviting, open-knit finish. Harvest was on September 25 and 26, so on the earlier side. Today, I find the 2012 a bit less compelling than it was upon release.

The first vintage of this wine was made in 1993. The 2012 La Ricolma is a very unique expression of Merlot. Usually this grape offers so much to the nose, but less in terms of structure or firmness in the mouth. In this vintage the opposite is true. The bouquet is more subdued in terms of its dark cherry, blackberry and spice. The palate shows tight tannins, bright acidity and loads of deep cherry flavors. The wine is shapely, delineated and focused in this vintage.
Another stunning wine, the 2012 La Ricolma (Merlot) captures all of the best qualities of the vintage in its extraordinary harmony and balance. Inky and almost unctuous at this early stage in its life, the 2012 is utterly captivating. Dark cherry jam, mocha, spice, mint licorice and incense all open up in a Ricolma that is exotic, deeply expressive and beautifully resonant through to the finish. At the same time, there is plenty of structural underpinning here. This is a tremendous showing from San Giusto.
