Tasted blind at Fine & Rare Wines' Clos Vougeot tasting, the 2013 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru from Jean-Jacques Confuron has a generous nose that comes racing out of the blocks without losing any of its delineation and precision. It has fine purity, perhaps more floral than its peers, gaining more intensity as it opens in the glass with black cherry and red plum aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly grainy tannin. There is good backbone to this Clos Vougeot, lending it a more masculine and less supple texture. It clams up towards the bitter-edged finish, but I feel this has long-term potential.

Tasted blind. Dark ruby. Quite a lot of leaf mould on the nose with freshness and some precision, well-balanced fruit and tannin, though no pronounced weight. (JR)

(75% new oak; 25% vendange entier ): Full red-ruby. Very ripe aromas of blackberry, cassis, chocolate and menthol. Densely packed but a bit youthfully brutal, showing good freshness considering that it has the highest pH (3.65) of this collection. Finishes with very good saline persistence and big, serious tannins that are nonetheless finer than those of the Chaboeufs.

Matured in 75% new oak with 25% whole-bunch fruit, the 2013 Clos Vougeot has a backward nose at first, unfolding with flinty blackcurrant and cassis notes that carry a surfeit of mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied, with soft tannin: deep blackcurrant and raspberry coulis notes smothered over a caressing finish. This is a fine Clos Vougeot determined to make an impression, but one that will require several years in bottle. This is a worthy follow-up to the 2012.
