Score 91+/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2014

(from a Beckstoffer vineyard that was originally part of the historic To Kalon vineyard): Bright ruby-red. Aromas of cassis, blackberry, bitter chocolate, espresso, mocha and minerals, with notes of licorice pastille and violet emerging with air. Big, rich and mouthcoating but with serious acidity and menthol reserve keeping the wine's fruit under wraps today. This distinctly medicinal cabernet is clearly better than the 2009 version but will need time in bottle to resolve its slightly disjointed acidity and absorb its oak tannins.

The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Good Times, Bad Times from the Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard reveals a glorious floral nose of creme de cassis and cedar, sweet vanillin, rich, creamy, medium to full-bodied flavors, and nice spicebox. Drink this serious Cabernet over the next 12-15 years. This is the North American Napa Valley outpost of Jonathan Maltus, who has a splendid reputation for his high quality offerings from St.-Emilion. This is my first look at his Napa bottlings, all of which take famous rock and roll songs as their names. Tel. (262) 246-3023
