The 2014 La Mondotte has a noticeably deep color. This is dense on the nose with dried blood-tinged red fruit, meat juices and iron filing aromas. It is a bit introspective initially, though it does open in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins, fine acidity and fleshiness, with more brightness and grace on the finish than many of its peers. There is assiduous use of oak here; this has aged better than its peers in bottle. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

Tasted blind. Evolved, deep colour. Open, minty and with lovely mature fruit aromas. Sweet in the middle, too, the tannins compact but there’s fruit to balance the fresh acidity. Lively and with better ageing capacity than some of these right-bank 2014s. (JH)

The 2014 La Mondotte has a candied bouquet with red cherries, crushed strawberry and orange blossom aromas, a vein of liquorish in the background. The palate is sweet and chewy and I feel just a little over-extracted with a dense, slightly labored finish that clearly needs bottle age. This is sultry at the moment but hopefully it will come good. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Tasted blind. Rich, sumptuous nose. Long spread of flavours on the end. Lots of energy and polish. Long and rich. (JR)
