The 2014 Olivier has an understated bouquet with cedar and tobacco scents, bay leaf and a hint of black tea. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, clean and pure, nicely integrated new oak with a touch of cedar and mint towards the finish. This is a well-crafted wine. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Tasted blind. Sweet fresh nose with some energy. Rich start and flattering but not too sweet. For the moment it’s a bit sweet and sour. (JR)
The 2014 Olivier was one of the very pleasant surprises, to wit, a vastly improved wine compared to its showing in barrel. It has a perfumed bouquet with fine purity, focused with mineral/cold stone scents filtering through the melange of red and black fruit. The palate is well balanced with supple tannin, a keen line of acidity and well-integrated oak. This displays more substance than recent vintages with a lovely allspice and cedar note towards the finish. I would give this a couple of years in bottle and then enjoy over the next 15-18 years. Tasted twice with consistent notes.
Plum and cherry and loads of cedar spice. Fragrant finish with some medicinal hints. Medium body, fades fairly quickly. (RH)
About the producer
Ch. Olivier is one of the few actual castles in Bordeaux – coming with a moat and drawbridge. Since Alexandre de Bethmann took over here in 2012, the château has been given a new lease of life, with quality on the rise.
